On the equivalence of the Einstein-Hilbert and the Einstein-Palatini formulations of general relativity for an arbitrary connection
In the framework of the Einstein-Palatini formalism, even though the
projective transformation connecting the arbitrary connection with the Levi
Civita connection has been floating in the literature for a long time and
perhaps the result was implicitly known in the affine gravity community, yet as
far as we know Julia and Silva were the first to realise its gauge character.
We rederive this result by using the Rosenfeld-Dirac-Bergmann approach to
constrained Hamiltonian systems and do a comprehensive self contained analysis
establishing the equivalence of the Einstein-Palatini and the metric
formulations without having to impose the gauge choice that the connection is
symmetric. We also make contact with the the Einstein-Cartan theory when the
matter Lagrangian has fermions.Comment: 18 pages. Slight change in the title and wording of some sections to

Model for illuminance produced by LEDs as a function of distance
CIE 2015, Manchester/UK, June 28 - July 4, 2015; http://session2015.cie.co.at/The lighting industry has experienced a revolution with the arrival of novel lighting
technologies in particular Light Emitting Diodes. LEDs have clear advantages in energy
efficiency over conventional lighting technologies, and since 19 % of electricity worldwide is
used for lighting, this can contribute significantly to saving energy problems worldwide and
contributing to Europe¿s 2020 strategy. In order to validate performance claims and stimulate
user confidence, as well as facilitate efficient development of this kind of products, dedicated
metrology is needed. The objective of this work was to study goniometrical aspects of LEDs,
and their dependence with distance to find a model to predict the illuminance at any distance.
A modified inverse-square law model, considering only the offset of the LED virtual source
with respect to their front tip is proposed. The applicability of the method was tested for 18
LED¿s types, with different angular and spectral distributions. This work was accomplished within the EMRP ENG05 Project “Metrology for Solid State Lighting”.

Relationship between weight and linear dimensions of Bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) following fattening on western Mediterranean farms
This study presents various models based on formulae relating weight and dimensions (length, height and width) of Bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus (L.), fattened in captivity. The main aim of establishing these expressions is to design tools for indirectly predicting the weight of a Bluefin tuna from measurements of one or more dimensions obtained using non- invasive methods such as stereoscopic cameras. Measurements of maximum length, height and width following slaughter were taken of fish fattened in captivity (n = 2078). Different relationships drawn from the dimensions of the tuna against their weight are fitted with part of the data collection and later checked against a reserved sample set. The resulting formu- lae are compared with the formulae most commonly used in the case of wild tuna. The results of this study confirm that, for tuna fattened in cages, the availability of more than one dimension to estimate weight improves the predictive power of the model and reduces error in the estimate.
